Bioluminescent shorelines occur when microscopic dinoflagellates concentrate in coastal waters. Each organism is a single cell. When waves break, footsteps press into surf, or currents agitate these organisms, internal cellular chemistry releases energy as light at approximately 470–490 nanometers — a sharp cyan glow. Individually, the light they emit is brief and small. But when millions are activated simultaneously, the shoreline appears electrically illuminated. Cumulative single-cellular emissions shape large formations.
